Grandmother Tammy Holmes held her five grandchildren for two and a half hours in a nearby sea jetty to avoid the fire which destroyed her and her husbands home in Dunalley, Tasmania.

According to Huffington Post,  Bonnie Walker, the mother of the five, said that she realized what was happening only after hearing the news on the radio that her children and parents were trapped by the flames.

Despite the arrival of three fire trucks, Mr. Holmes could not defend the home he built himself.

“It’s all gone, every last item, but it’s a great sense of relief to think that we lost not one hair on a child’s head,” Mr Holmes said.

Tammy and her five grandchildren eventually made their way to safety as the fire burnt itself out.
