Billy Mills and Hugh Owens dog rescued owner from fire

In Bowie, Maryland, retired Lt. Billy Mills saved a woman from her burning home after her dog, Pumpkin, guided Mills to its master.

According to ABC 7, Mills was driving through the town when he noticed smoke coming from the house, and decided to drive to the scene to check it out.

Mills attempted to get Pumpkin to follow him away from the house, but Pumpkin kept running to the back door of the house, which eventually led Mills to the body of a fainted woman.

He recalled, “I noticed there was a lady four or five feet in there on her knees with the fire blowing over the top of head…I crawled in two or three feet and pulled her out and took her in the yard.”

The woman suffered burns and smoke inhalation, but is expected to make a full recovery.

If the dog owner stays in the hospital, Pumpkin will be cared for by a local firefighter.
