Sonali Mukherjee, 27, of New Delhi, India, who was the victim of an acid attack which left her face severely disfigured, recently won 2.5 million rupee on the Indian version of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire.”
According to Hindustan Times, after denying the sexual advances of three students nine years ago, Mukherjee was attacked when the men retaliated by throwing acid into her face, melting away her features and leaving her partially blind and deaf.
“They couldn’t take a ‘no’ from me and so they decided to snatch my face, and steal my life away,” Mukherjee states.
In an attempt to bring attention to not only her attack, but the countless attacks on Indian women that are too often not taken as seriously as they should be, Mukherjee applied to be a contestant on the “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” game show.
Mukherjee plans to use her winnings (about $45,000 in USD) towards plastic surgery, but will still need to raise much more money before the operation.
