(iWIDK By Allie Beauregard) – As dedicated philanthropists put together charity holiday packages, they were horrified to find a majority of the donated goods were missing.
As Scott Raab and the other volunteers at Move America Forward, based in Sacramento, loaded boxes of non-perishables with a Christmas twist en route to troops in Afghanistan Monday morning, they realized that the lock to the storage unit containing the boxes had been chopped open overnight and 25 boxes – a $5,000 value – had been stolen.
The organization had been collecting items for months, and the packages included soaps and deodorants, candy and dried meats, coffee and tea, and a festive touch of stockings and holiday cards hand-written by thankful community members.
To see such a selfless effort almost thwarted by heartless robbers was downright disturbing to Raab and his team.
“You know it’s really sad that someone would take this from the troops,” Raab told CBS of the “grinches.”
But with a glimpse of optimism, he also added that he hoped the stolen boxes might still get mailed out if the culprits had a moment of remorse, as packaging had already been paid.
If, however, the boxes are to never reach the American soldiers overseas, Move America Forward has already jumped on restocking their donation boxes.
