(iWIDK By Andrew Urban) - Officials that organize the temple festival in Nanchang, Jiangxi in southern China have told beggars they can beg from inside cages or be removed from town.

Nanchang, Jiangxi province lock homless in cages for public fair

This ultimatum was delivered after increasingly large numbers of beggars began to flock to the event from around the countryside for the past couple of years, which festival organizers say was disrupting the other attendees and making it uncomfortable for everyone.

The beggars are free to go when they want, but must leave the city entirely if they do not wish to beg in the cages.

Officials defended their actions claiming that the beggars were quite comfortable, and that those willing to put up with the humiliation were receiving food and gifts from festival goers.

Not all of the festival goers were quite so amused, according to Orange News, one said, ”They are treating them like zoo animals. What will they have to do next – tricks for their food?”
